The Life and Death exercise for lesson 3 was interesting – to see how many different images can represent a meaning, especially on the back of a truck:

I chose the Flora Womens Mini Marathon website to review: www.florawomensminimarathon.ie:

At first glance, the design of the front page appears simple with sufficient space around each header. The important elements such as date of marathon, time left and main menus are emphasized sufficiently. The use of space to create unity on the main page is very clear. I feel that the use of the main green colour on all items did not create harmony at a first glance as it makes it difficult to know where to look first. The creator of the website appears to have used 2-dimensional space throughout. The two photos on the page make good use of placement as they draw the eye to the main focal points to show women enjoying their day out at the marathon. The picture at the top of the page illustrates movement with the women in running motion. I didnt see any obvious use of proportion on the web page in relation to size and scale as objects are placed around 3 columns. Also I cant see any obvious use of the rule of thirds or golden mean in the webpage. Overall the webpage provides the main information needed to participate in the marathon and portrays it as a fun event.

This exercise required us to create drawings for roadsigns to depict the meaning of the roadsign in order to illustrate immediate and practical communications.

Todays exercise was using photoshop to create a melon image using individual fruit images.melon-jpeg-blog1

The most difficult thing is remembering the shortcuts and using separate layers.

This photoshop will take practice but it is a very useful application for design principles.

This exercise required creating a positive image of a person by using the photoshop techniques that we learned over the last 4 lessons. (I’ve realised that photoshop requires practice and a lot of patience from my neighbour in class!).

I definitely think that Tom Selleck wins over Gerry Ryan any day!!

Squares Exercise

Squares Exercise

Our first lesson involved tapping into our creative ability that has long been deactivated for myself and yet finished quite surprised.

We used boxes to communicate the words: Order, Increase, Bold, Congested, Tension, Bold and Playful. (Quite interesting the number of ways that squares can be arranged to communicate without words).

Then we drew symbols/pictures to represent 10 negative things and 10 positive things (amazing how we relate pictures to our own preferences and lives!). (Even used colors!)
